A Legacy Written in Ross Shield Rugby: The Williams Whānau

For the Williams whānau, rugby is far more than just a game; it is a shared tradition, a mark of pride, and a enduring legacy passed down through generations.

That proud lineage began with the late James Tuahu Williams. His dedication and passion for the sport laid the foundation for three generations of Ross Shield representation. Following closely in his footsteps, both of his sons, Richard Williams and James Williams Jr., earned selection to compete in the prestigious tournament.

Today, that tradition is carried forward by his grandsons, Kahn Williams and Harker Williams, who have proudly worn the Hastings East jersey. This season marks a remarkable milestone as Harker runs out for his third consecutive campaign representing Hastings East Ross Shield. Harker created history by being Parkvale Schools first ever year 6 student to make a Ross Shield team.

When the whānau gathered to bid James Tuahu Williams farewell on his final journey, six Ross Shield caps were placed atop his coffin—a moving testament to the influence, discipline, and pride he instilled across generations. In just a few weeks, the whānau will celebrate yet another milestone with the presentation of cap number seven, continuing a remarkable sporting legacy that remains as strong as ever.
