2026 Introduction

The Organising Committee

A word from the organisers

Kia ora koutou katoa,

On behalf of the Hastings Primary Schools Ross Shield Committee, it is my pleasure to welcome players, coaches, managers, officials, whānau and supporters to the 2026 Advanced Plumbing Hawke’s Bay Ross Shield Tournament being held in Hastings, Heretaunga.

Ross Shield is a special part of primary school rugby in Hawke’s Bay. Generations of young players have pulled on their district jersey and represented their schools, whānau and communities with pride. While we all love the competition, Ross Shield is much more than the final result. It is about playing alongside your mates, representing your district, and creating memories and friendships that last well beyond this week.

A tournament like Ross Shield doesn’t just happen. A huge thank you to our Hastings Organising Committee for the months of planning, organising and problem-solving that have gone into this week. Our goal has been to create a tournament that players and whānau will enjoy and remember for years to come, and I am incredibly proud of what this committee has put together.

A special thank you to George and the team at St John’s College for opening up your school and allowing us to call St John’s home this week. Hosting a tournament of this size is a huge undertaking, and your hospitality and willingness to work alongside our committee has been outstanding.

To the local businesses, organisations and sponsors who have supported us in bringing the 2026 Hastings tournament together – thank you. We know times are tough, which makes your willingness to support this tournament even more meaningful. Every contribution has helped us create the experience we want for our players and whānau, and we genuinely appreciate your support.

To our coaches, managers and referees, and to the parents, grandparents and whānau supporting our players – thank you. Many hours are given to help these young athletes, both on and off the field. Behind every player is a group of people who have supported them along the way, and we hope this week creates some special memories for you too.

Finally, to our players – enjoy the week. Be proud when you pull on that jersey. Play hard, play fair, look after your mates and make memories you’ll talk about for years to come.

“Ehara taku toa i te toa takitahi, engari he toa takitini. My strength is not mine alone, but comes from the strength of many.”

Ngā mihi nui,

Andrew Dickson, Chairman

Hastings Primary Schools Ross Shield Committee
