Tino was a member of the 1980 Wairoa team that won the Ross Shield trophy. In that team with Tino was this year’s assistant coach Matt Bird. Tino continued on his rugby career playing for Wairoa College, through to 1st XV and then on to Wairoa Celtic and various representative teams. On moving to Central Hawke’s Bay he played for both the Central Waipawa and Otane Clubs. Tragically, Tino Amato lost his life on the rugby field doing what he loved. He will be remembered by all and especially during the Ross Shield tournament.

With the Ross Shield tournament now over 100 years old, Kelvin would like to think that in another 100 years Tino will still be remembered. Thanks to this latest trophy that is likely to be the case.

The inaugural game for the trophy was played last year and the Wairoa side proudly took the trophy home after their 13–5 victory over Central.
